The Mechanical Industry Research Laboratories (MIRL) was founded in 1969 by the name of the Metal Industrial Research Institute. It was subordinated to ITRI in 1973, and changed to the current name in 1983. With devotion of over three decades, MIRL has the most advanced and excellent manpower and technology capability. It devotes itself to R&D of kernel technologies such as precision machinery, automation and power machinery.

In particular, it stresses development of 3C product fabrication, semiconductor equipment and micro/Nano engineering technology. It helps upgrading domestic industries and their international competitiveness. It is also aggressively forming alliances with international leading firms and research institutes, making Taiwan synchronizing with the world in industrial development.
